I have a good friend who races some seriously fast machines, but what does he drive as a daily? A base model 1992 Jeep Cherokee with a 5spd manual.
I’ll have more pics of this ridiculously clean XJ as the project progresses, but for now, enjoy this shot of an engine bay that was steam cleaned while the 4.0L powerplant was out getting a solid going through.
I’ve been toying with the idea of picking up a late model YJ Wranger for use as a summer cruiser, and given that another friend of mine as a ‘91 Cherokee Briarwood, I think I might just have to be the third leg of this 4x4 tripod.

Anyone and everyone with the means and ability would drive a 4 litre Jeep

You’re either spending money on your daily or your race car, rarely both.

For sure! My old man had a 1987 Cherokee Chief 4-door ... had some awesome adventures with that thing!

Beautiful, simple, and satisfying everyday machine. I’ve missed my ‘92 XJ for the last 12 years since I sold it. Very jealous of your friend.

Nope. I have the means and ability. I have zero want for one.

This is a bad opinion

Not a 4.0 XJ, but a 5.2 ZJ. This $500 beater was possibly my favorite daily I ever had simply because it was a 0fuxgvn affair. I sold it because I moved a few states away and could only take my Z28 with me.
I also had a ‘91 Cherokee years back that got shot up, but we won’t get into that.
If you want to keep it simple, stupid, I suggest an old Jeep, be it an XJ, YJ, ZJ, TJ, CJ or something else. You simply can’t beat an old Jeep.

This is a correct fact.

So what would you suggest as a better 4x4 to buy?

None. As I have no want for one.

I used to be that way. Then I got to ride in a few old school 4x4's and then I really started to appreciate the simplicity and go anywhere adventure abilities they have. Now I have almost no desire for a fast car because of things like snow, floods, camping ect. So I get it. Hopefully you get the itch someday and can enjoy the other side.

I couldn’t DD a similar era Jeep either with that engine. No way.

But the point of #FiestaSTLife is to have lots of $$$ left over for other basic toys is it not? I say this having had a Fiesta ST for 8 months(courtesy of Ford) and not for one minute thinking I could live with one as a long term daily.

I had to leave it stuck in a massive mud pit overnight (had a presentation!) and came back the next day to find it stuck in the opposite direction and full of bullet holes, no more windows, the swaybar pulled through the grill and a broken u-joint on the driver’s front.

That’s why when I get my FiST, I will be keeping my 4Runner.

Considering I do rallycross with mine I fail to see the appeal of doing a 3 mph crawl when I can blast along snow and dirt at highway speeds

Snow and floods never bothered me and my hatchback has been an amazing camping buddy.

But some of us the objective is not to Blast along when out in the country. Rallycross is cool but there are other things. Like turning the vehicle off and enjoying where you are.
